Quick Garden Makeover: Transforming Your Outdoor Space
Looking to refresh your garden without taking on a massive landscaping project? A quick garden makeover can make a big difference, enhancing beauty, functionality, and enjoyment. Recently, we tackled a garden makeover with some strategic updates, from improving drainage to replanting, and even revitalizing the lawn. Here’s a rundown of what we did to breathe new life into the space.
1. Fixing Drainage in Boggy Areas
One of the first things was to rectify poor lawn drainage which was leading to waterlogged soil, stifling plant growth and making the area unusable. To remedy this, we installed a simple drainage system, digging a trench, installing overflow and cloth to direct excess water away remove a persistently boggy spot.
2. Replanting for Better Growth
We took a close look at our plants and relocated several to areas more suited to their light and soil needs. Moving sun-loving plants to sunny borders and shade-loving plants to sheltered spots will help optimize their growth. This small change has a big impact on the garden’s cohesiveness, with each plant now in a location where it could thrive and showcase its best colors.
3. Revitalizing an Unloved Area with Shade-Loving Hydrangeas
In a previously neglected area, we introduced shade-loving hydrangeas. These plants will bring a splash of soft color and texture to the shady south of the house. Hydrangeas thrive in shaded conditions, adding lush greenery and graceful blooms that will fill out the space beautifully.
4. Underplanting Specimen Trees with Low-Maintenance Ground Cover
To reduce maintenance and control weeds, we under-planted specimen trees with two types of creeping native ground cover. This choice will fill the area with attractive, low-maintenance greenery but also help to retain moisture in the soil. The ground cover’s lush spread complements the trees, creating a layered, natural look that requires minimal upkeep.
5. Adding Sun-Loving Color under Fruit Trees
For a burst of brightness, we planted sun-loving flowers under our fruit trees. The flowers will bring cheerful color and help attract pollinators, giving the whole area an orchard-like feel. With careful selection of plants that thrive in the sun, we created a lively display that complements the fruit trees and enhances the garden’s overall charm.
6. Lawn Care: Removing Weeds and Topdressing
To bring the lawn up to par with the revitalized garden beds, we undertook some targeted lawn care. Removing weeds helps create a uniform, healthy-looking lawn, and we then applied a topdressing of nutrient-rich soil. This step nourished the grass, helping it grow more evenly and retain moisture more effectively. The topdressing also promoted healthy root development, ensuring the lawn remains lush and resilient through changing weather conditions
